Influenza A Stämme refers to the different subtypes of the influenza A virus. Influenza A viruses are a major cause of seasonal flu in humans and are also responsible for pandemics. They are classified into subtypes based on two surface proteins: hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). There are 18 known hemagglutinin subtypes and 11 known neuraminidase subtypes. Combinations of these proteins create different subtypes, such as H1N1, H3N2, and H5N1.

These subtypes vary in their host range. Some, like H1N1 and H3N2, are commonly found in humans. Others, like H5N1 and H7N9, are primarily found in birds but can occasionally infect humans. Influenza A viruses are constantly evolving through two main processes: antigenic drift and antigenic shift. Antigenic drift involves small, gradual changes in the genes of influenza viruses that happen continually over time. Antigenic shift involves a sudden, major change in influenza A viruses, leading to new strains that humans have little or no immunity to. This can occur when a new influenza A virus emerges from an animal population that infects humans for the first time.

The subtype of influenza A virus circulating significantly impacts public health. For instance, the H1N1 strain caused a global pandemic in 2009, and highly pathogenic avian influenza strains like H5N1 have caused serious illness and death in humans when transmission occurs. Monitoring and understanding the characteristics of different influenza A strains are crucial for developing effective vaccines and public health strategies to prevent and control influenza outbreaks.
