Inflectionaalimorfeemien, in linguistic terminology, are bound morphemes that attach to a word to express its grammatical information without creating a new lexical item. They modify features such as person, number, tense, mood, aspect, case, or gender and therefore contribute to the word’s inflection. Inflectional morphemes are distinguished from derivational morphemes because they do not typically change the word’s core meaning or its part of speech; they mainly signal grammatical relationships within the sentence.

Most inflectional morphemes are affixes, with suffixes being the most common in many languages. Some languages also employ prefixes or infixes for inflection. In addition, inflection can be realized through internal changes to the word, such as vowel alternations (ablaut) or suppletion, where an entire root is replaced to mark a grammatical category. The exact system and set of inflectional morphemes vary widely across languages, and some languages have rich, highly productive inflectional inventories while others rely on little to no inflection.

Examples across languages illustrate the concept. English uses suffixal inflection like -s for plural or -ed for past tense, and -'s for possession. Spanish marks person and number on verb endings (hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, habláis, hablan). German often marks case and number on articles and noun endings, while other languages may rely on vowel changes or irregular forms. Inflectional morphemes frequently interact with agreement within phrases, ensuring consistency between nouns, adjectives, verbs, and pronouns.

In linguistic analysis, inflectional morphemes are contrasted with derivational morphemes, which alter meaning or word class. They are central to the study of morphology and the understanding of how languages encode grammatical information in word forms.
