Inertiamittausmenetelmä, known in English as inertial measurement, refers to a technique used to determine the motion of an object by measuring its acceleration and angular velocity. This is typically achieved using an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). An IMU commonly comprises accelerometers, which measure linear acceleration along each of the device's axes, and gyroscopes, which measure angular velocity around each axis. Some IMUs may also include magnetometers to sense the Earth's magnetic field, providing a reference for heading.

The raw data from accelerometers and gyroscopes are subject to drift and noise. Therefore, sophisticated algorithms, often employing sensor fusion techniques like Kalman filters, are used to process this data. These algorithms combine information from multiple sensors to estimate the object's orientation, position, and velocity with greater accuracy and stability over time. Inertial measurement is a fundamental technology in navigation systems, robotics, aerospace, and motion tracking applications. Its primary advantage is its autonomy, meaning it does not rely on external signals like GPS. However, it is susceptible to accumulated errors over extended periods, necessitating occasional recalibration or integration with other navigation aids.
