Inducer

An inducer is a molecule that triggers gene expression or enzyme production by altering the activity of a regulatory system. In prokaryotes, inducers commonly interact with repressors or activators to modulate transcription of operons. In many inducible systems, a repressor binds to a operator sequence to block transcription, and the binding of an inducer to the repressor causes it to release the DNA, allowing transcription to proceed. In other systems, inducers activate transcription factors that promote gene expression.

A classic example is the lac operon in Escherichia coli, where allolactose (or its analogs such as isopropyl β-D-1-thiogalactopyranoside, IPTG) acts as an inducer to relieve repression and enable lactose-metabolic genes. In research and biotechnology, inducible expression systems use defined inducers such as IPTG, arabinose, or tetracycline to control when a gene is turned on, providing temporal regulation of protein production.

In pharmacology and toxicology, the term inducer also describes substances that increase the expression or activity of metabolic enzymes, notably the cytochrome P450 family. Inducers can accelerate the metabolism of concomitantly administered drugs, potentially reducing efficacy or altering toxicity. Examples include rifampicin, phenobarbital, and certain herbal compounds. This form of induction can be reversible but may require time to reach a new steady state.
