Indirektendirecten

Indirektendirecten is an informal term sometimes used in linguistics and narratology to describe the interaction or fusion of indirect and direct speech within a single discourse segment. It is not an established term in mainstream German grammar, but appears in exploratory discussions about how reporting forms can alternate or blend in narrative text.

Definition and scope

The concept covers phenomena such as transitions from indirect to direct speech and back, embedded quotations, and narrative sequences that mix indirect and direct forms. It may also refer to mixed or blended forms like free indirect discourse that incorporates direct quotation elements, thereby creating a hybrid reporting style.

Relation to existing concepts

Indirektendirecten sits alongside the traditional dichotomy of indirekte Rede (indirect speech) and direkte Rede (direct speech). It is related to, but distinct from, freie indirekte Rede (free indirect discourse), which already blends narration and reported speech. The term tends to be used more as a descriptive label in discussions about authorial strategy, rather than as a formal grammatical category.

Examples

Direct speech: Er sagte, "Ich komme später." Indirect speech: Er sagte, er komme später. Mixed form (indirektendirecten usage): Er sagte, er komme später, und dann fügte er hinzu: "Ich bleibe nicht lange." Such mixed passages are discussed as having a blended texture that shifts between quotation and report within a single passage.

Applications

In analysis, indirektendirecten can serve as a convenient shorthand for passages that oscillate between quotation and reporting, highlighting stylistic effects, attribution, and the reader’s interpretation of stance and reliability.
