Indeksioptimointi, often translated as index optimization, refers to the process of tuning and refining database indexes to improve query performance. Databases use indexes to speed up data retrieval by allowing them to locate specific rows without scanning the entire table. However, poorly designed or outdated indexes can actually hinder performance, leading to slower queries.

The goal of indeksioptimointi is to ensure that the indexes present in a database are the most effective for the expected workloads. This involves several key activities. Firstly, it includes analyzing query patterns to identify which indexes are being used and which are not. Unused indexes consume storage space and add overhead to data modification operations like inserts, updates, and deletes, making their removal a potential optimization.
