Incongruity

Incongruity refers to a lack of harmony or correspondence between elements, producing a mismatch between expectations and reality. In everyday use, it describes situations where different parts do not fit together or contrast in ways that surprise or jar the observer. In aesthetics and critique, incongruity arises when ideas, forms, or objects are juxtaposed in unexpected ways, challenging norms and provoking interest rather than threat.

In humor, the incongruity theory holds that laughter emerges when there is a mismatch between what one anticipates and what actually occurs, followed by a benign resolution. The mind recognizes the discrepancy and finds amusement in the surprise, provided the context remains non-threatening.
