Impedansforholdet, or impedance ratio, is a concept used in various fields, most notably in electrical engineering and acoustics. In electrical engineering, it refers to the ratio of the impedance of one component or circuit to the impedance of another component or circuit. This ratio is crucial for understanding how power is transferred between different parts of a system. For instance, when matching the output impedance of a source to the input impedance of a load, a specific impedance ratio is desired to achieve maximum power transfer. Deviations from this ideal ratio can lead to signal reflections and reduced efficiency.

In acoustics, impedance ratio is used to describe the difference in acoustic impedance between two different media. Acoustic impedance is the resistance to sound wave propagation. When a sound wave encounters a boundary between two media with significantly different acoustic impedances, a portion of the wave will be reflected, and another portion will be transmitted. The impedance ratio dictates the proportion of sound energy that is reflected versus transmitted. For example, the impedance ratio between air and water is very high, which is why sound is largely reflected at the surface of water, making it difficult for sound to travel efficiently from air into water, and vice versa. This principle is important in applications such as ultrasound imaging and underwater acoustics.
