Immune populations, or immuunipopulaatiot in Finnish, refers to the collective group of immune cells within an organism that work together to protect it from pathogens and other harmful substances. This complex system involves various types of cells, each with specialized functions, and is crucial for maintaining health and preventing disease.

The immune system is broadly divided into two main branches: the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system. The innate immune system provides a rapid, non-specific response, acting as the first line of defense. It includes cells like phagocytes (macrophages and neutrophils) that engulf and destroy invaders, and natural killer cells that target infected or cancerous cells.

The adaptive immune system, on the other hand, offers a more targeted and long-lasting defense. It is characterized by its ability to recognize specific pathogens and develop immunological memory. Key players in the adaptive immune system are lymphocytes, which include B cells and T cells. B cells produce antibodies that neutralize pathogens, while T cells have diverse roles, such as directly killing infected cells (cytotoxic T cells) or helping to regulate the immune response (helper T cells).

The interaction and coordination between these various immune cells form the immuunipopulaatiot. The health and effectiveness of these populations can be influenced by factors like genetics, age, nutrition, and exposure to pathogens. When the immune system is compromised, individuals become more susceptible to infections and diseases.
