Ilutooteid, also known as food additives, are substances added to food to improve its appearance, texture, taste, or shelf life. They are widely used in the food industry to enhance the quality and safety of food products. Food additives can be classified into several categories based on their function, including preservatives, antioxidants, emulsifiers, stabilizers, and colorants.

Preservatives are commonly used to prevent the growth of microorganisms and extend the shelf life of food. Examples include sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, and propionic acid. Antioxidants, such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), help prevent the oxidation of fats and oils, which can lead to rancidity.

Emulsifiers are used to stabilize mixtures of oil and water, such as in mayonnaise or salad dressings. Common emulsifiers include lecithin, mono- and diglycerides, and polysorbates. Stabilizers, like carboxymethylcellulose and sodium alginate, help maintain the structure and texture of food products.

Colorants are added to food to improve its appearance and make it more appealing to consumers. Natural colorants, such as annatto and beta-carotene, are derived from plant or animal sources, while synthetic colorants, like tartrazine and sunset yellow, are chemically produced.

The use of food additives is regulated by various food safety authorities, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). These regulations ensure that food additives are safe for consumption and do not pose any health risks to consumers. However, the use of certain food additives, such as artificial colors and flavors, has been a subject of debate due to potential health concerns and consumer preferences.
