Ilmavärähtelyt

Ilmavärähtelyt, also known as air vibrations, are disturbances that propagate through the air as waves. These vibrations are the fundamental mechanism by which sound is transmitted. When an object vibrates, it causes the surrounding air molecules to compress and expand, creating areas of higher and lower pressure. These pressure variations travel outwards from the source as a longitudinal wave, meaning the particles of the medium (in this case, air) oscillate parallel to the direction of wave propagation.

The speed at which ilmavärähtelyt travel through the air is dependent on factors such as temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure. At sea level and a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, the speed of sound in air is approximately 343 meters per second. The characteristics of these vibrations, specifically their frequency and amplitude, determine the perceived qualities of sound. Frequency, measured in Hertz (Hz), corresponds to the pitch of the sound, with higher frequencies producing higher pitches. Amplitude, which relates to the magnitude of the pressure variations, determines the loudness or intensity of the sound. Humans can typically perceive sounds within a frequency range of approximately 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Beyond this range, sounds are considered infrasound (lower frequency) or ultrasound (higher frequency).
