Ilmatieteenlaitos

Ilmatieteen laitos, known in English as the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), is Finland's national meteorological service and research institute. It provides weather forecasts and warnings for the public and for government authorities, and supports safety and efficiency in aviation, maritime navigation, road transport, agriculture, and energy production. FMI also conducts scientific research in meteorology, climatology, oceanography, hydrology, and space weather and operates national observation networks, radar systems, and satellite data processing to support its operations.

FMI's activities include numerical weather prediction, climate monitoring and services, and risk assessments related to extreme weather and climate change. It collaborates with national agencies and international organizations such as the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), EUMETNET, and ECMWF, and supplies data and products to European and global weather and climate services. The institute also maintains public weather services, including forecast bulletins and warnings, as well as tailored services for maritime and aviation users.

Headquartered in Helsinki, FMI operates across Finland with research facilities and observation sites and participates in international research projects and European programs. Its work supports weather forecasting accuracy, climate research, and the sustainable management of natural resources in a changing environment.
