Ilmanlämpöpumput, often referred to as heat pumps, are devices that transfer thermal energy from one space to another through a refrigeration cycle. They can be used for both heating and cooling, making them a versatile climate control solution. The basic principle involves a refrigerant that circulates through a system of coils and a compressor. In heating mode, the pump extracts heat from the outdoor air, even at low temperatures, and transfers it indoors. In cooling mode, the process is reversed, moving heat from the indoor air to the outside.

There are several types of air-to-air heat pumps, with the most common being split systems, which consist of an outdoor unit and one or more indoor units. Ductless mini-split systems are popular for their flexibility in heating and cooling individual rooms. Ducted heat pumps, on the other hand, connect to a building's existing ductwork, distributing conditioned air throughout the space.

The efficiency of an air-to-air heat pump is measured by its Seasonal Performance Factor (SPF) for heating and its Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) for cooling. Higher SPF, EER, and SEER ratings indicate greater energy efficiency. While they consume electricity to operate, heat pumps can deliver more heat energy than the electrical energy they consume, making them an energy-efficient alternative to traditional electric resistance heating. They are increasingly popular in residential and commercial buildings as a sustainable and cost-effective way to manage indoor temperatures.
