Ilmanlämmönvaihtimen

An ilmanlämmönvaihdin, or air heat exchanger, is a device used to transfer heat between two air streams. Its primary function is to preheat incoming fresh air using the heat from outgoing stale air, thereby reducing the energy required for heating or cooling the building. This process is a crucial component in many ventilation systems, particularly in heat recovery ventilation (HRV) and energy recovery ventilation (ERV) units.

The basic principle of an air heat exchanger involves passing two air streams through separate channels or passages that are in close proximity to each other. Heat from the warmer air stream is conducted through a separating material, such as metal plates or fins, and transferred to the cooler air stream. This counter-current or cross-current flow design maximizes the efficiency of heat transfer.

There are several types of air heat exchangers, including plate heat exchangers, rotary heat exchangers (also known as heat wheels), and run-around coil systems. Plate heat exchangers are common in residential and commercial applications, offering good efficiency and reliability. Rotary heat exchangers, which use a rotating matrix to absorb and release heat, are known for their high recovery rates. Run-around coil systems involve two separate coils with a circulating liquid that transfers heat between the air streams.
