Ilmankäsittelylaitteistoilla, or air handling units (AHUs), are sophisticated mechanical systems designed to control and maintain the quality of indoor air. They are a crucial component of modern building services, ensuring comfortable and healthy environments in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. An AHU typically comprises several key sections, each performing a specific function.

The primary function of an AHU is to condition the air, which involves heating, cooling, humidifying, or dehumidifying it to meet specific temperature and humidity requirements. Air is drawn into the unit, either from outside (fresh air) or recirculated from within the building, or a combination of both. This incoming air then passes through filters to remove particulate matter such as dust, pollen, and other airborne contaminants.

Following filtration, the air moves to heating or cooling coils, where its temperature is adjusted. Humidifiers or dehumidifiers may also be integrated to control moisture levels. After conditioning, the air is propelled through the building's ductwork by a fan. Advanced AHUs can also incorporate features like heat recovery systems, which transfer thermal energy between outgoing and incoming air streams to improve energy efficiency.

The control system of an AHU manages the operation of all its components, maintaining the desired indoor air quality and temperature. AHUs are essential for ventilation, ensuring a supply of fresh air while removing stale or contaminated air, thereby preventing the buildup of pollutants and promoting occupant well-being. Their design and configuration are tailored to the specific needs of each building.
