Ilmalämmönvaihdin is a Finnish term that translates to "air heat exchanger" in English. It is a device designed to transfer heat from one air stream to another without the two air streams mixing. This process is commonly used in ventilation systems to pre-heat or pre-cool incoming fresh air using the outgoing exhaust air.

The primary function of an ilmalämmönvaihdin is to improve energy efficiency within a building. By recovering heat from exhaust air, the amount of energy required to heat incoming fresh air in colder climates is significantly reduced. Conversely, in warmer climates, it can pre-cool incoming air, lessening the load on the air conditioning system. This heat recovery not only saves energy but also contributes to a more comfortable indoor environment by maintaining a consistent temperature.

There are several types of ilmalämmönvaihtimet, with rotary heat exchangers and plate heat exchangers being among the most common. Rotary heat exchangers utilize a rotating wheel coated with a material that absorbs and releases heat. As the wheel turns, it passes through both the exhaust and supply air streams, transferring heat between them. Plate heat exchangers consist of a series of thin plates that create separate channels for the two air streams. Heat is conducted through the plates from the warmer air to the cooler air.
