Illativetranslative

Illativetranslative is a term used in some linguistic discussions to describe a hypothetical or theoretical case that combines the functions of illative and translative. The illative is a directional case signaling motion into a location (for example into a place), while the translative marks a change of state or role (such as becoming something). An illativetranslative would, in principle, express both notions in a single morpheme or fused suffix, conveying the idea of moving into a state or role.

The concept is primarily encountered in typological or historical discussions of Finno-Ugric and related languages, where rich case systems sometimes invite proposals of merged or multifunctional forms. It is not a standard category in mainstream, widely used descriptive grammars of any major language, and there is no broad consensus that a distinct illativetranslative exists as an attested, independently used case in a living language.

In practice, languages with illative and translative both present typically maintain separate forms for each function. When researchers discuss illativetranslative, they usually frame it as a theoretical possibility, a historical remnant, or a theoretical construct illustrating how case systems can package multiple semantic directions into a single morphosyntactic vehicle. Because evidence for a widely attested illativetranslative is scarce, it remains a niche topic within linguistic typology rather than a mainstream grammatical category.
