Illaterminology is a speculative and informal concept that describes the idea of language evolving in such a way that common words or phrases acquire the opposite of their original meaning over time. It is not a recognized linguistic term or a documented phenomenon in formal linguistics. Instead, it is often discussed in online forums, creative writing, or as a thought experiment about the fluidity and potential for semantic drift in language.

The core of illaterminology lies in the observation that word meanings can change, sometimes drastically, through usage, cultural shifts, and deliberate subversion. For instance, words like "bad" can be used colloquially to mean "good" or "excellent," such as in "that's a bad guitar solo." This existing linguistic phenomenon, known as semantic inversion or enantiosemy, is what illaterminology extrapolates upon.

Proponents of the concept imagine scenarios where this inversion becomes widespread and systematic, leading to a significant portion of the vocabulary having its antonymic meaning. For example, in a hypothetical illaterminological future, "yes" might routinely mean "no," and "love" might signify "hate." This would render communication extremely difficult for those not privy to the new semantic rules, highlighting the importance of shared understanding in language.
