Ikketermiske

Ikketermiske is a Norwegian adjective used in scientific and technical contexts to describe phenomena, processes, or effects that do not involve heat transfer as a core mechanism. The word is formed from the negation 'ikke-' and 'termisk' (thermal).

In physics and engineering, 'ikketermiske' may describe processes driven by mechanical, electrical, magnetic, or optical effects where the observable outcome is not associated with a net change in temperature. In biology and medicine, it appears in discussions of non-thermal effects of electromagnetic fields or radiation, i.e., effects not caused by heating. In materials science, it can qualify phenomena such as phase changes driven by chemical potential, pressure, or electrical fields where thermal input is minimal.

It is a descriptive qualifier rather than a formal technical category; it should not substitute precise thermodynamic terms. When possible, authors specify the actual heat exchange, enthalpy change, or temperature variation, and avoid conflating non-thermal with isothermal or adiabatic processes.
