The term is a neologism, a portmanteau of the Dutch word "ikke" (meaning "me" or "I") and "bijektiv" (a variation of "bifigurativ" or "bigender"). It describes a personal identity where an individual's gender identity is fluid or multifaceted, but they do not feel accurately represented by existing terms like bisexual or bigender. The emphasis is on a subjective experience of gender that is distinct and personal, resisting categorization.

The core of Ikkebijektiv lies in the idea that self-identification is paramount.
