IgE antikohdat, often referred to as anti-IgE antibodies, are a class of therapeutic proteins designed to target and neutralize immunoglobulin E (IgE) in the body. IgE is a specific type of antibody primarily involved in allergic reactions and defense against parasitic infections. In individuals with allergies, IgE antibodies mistakenly identify harmless substances like pollen, dust mites, or certain foods as threats. This triggers the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine from mast cells and basophils, leading to allergic symptoms.

Anti-IgE antibodies work by binding to circulating IgE molecules before they can attach to these effector cells. By sequestering IgE, these antibodies prevent it from initiating the allergic cascade. This therapeutic approach aims to reduce the severity and frequency of allergic reactions. They are typically administered through injection.

The development and use of anti-IgE therapies have provided a significant advancement in managing moderate to severe allergic diseases, particularly allergic asthma and chronic spontaneous urticaria, where other treatments have proven insufficient. While generally well-tolerated, potential side effects can include reactions at the injection site and, in rare cases, anaphylaxis, although the risk is significantly lower than with uncontrolled allergic reactions. Research continues to explore the potential applications of anti-IgE antibodies for other conditions involving IgE.
