Identitám is a term that refers to the psychological process of forming a stable sense of self. It is a key developmental task, particularly during adolescence, though it continues throughout the lifespan. The concept was extensively explored by psychologist Erik Erikson, who described identity formation as a central crisis in his theory of psychosocial development.

During the identity versus role confusion stage, typically occurring in adolescence, individuals grapple with questions about who they are, what they believe in, and what their place is in the world. This involves exploring various roles, values, and goals, and then committing to a chosen set. Successful navigation of this stage leads to the development of a strong sense of identity, characterized by a coherent and integrated self-concept.

Conversely, a failure to establish a clear identity can result in role confusion, a state of uncertainty about one's identity and future direction. This can manifest as indecisiveness, a lack of personal values, or an unstable sense of self.
