Identiteete

Identiteete is the Estonian plural noun for identities. It is used across disciplines to refer to different kinds of identities or sets of them. The term is a loanword from identity, ultimately from Latin identitas and French identité.

In mathematics and logic, identity denotes an equality that is valid for all values of the variables involved. Collections of such equalities are often called identities, for example trigonometric identities or algebraic identities. The plural identiteete may appear in Estonian texts to discuss various identities.

In philosophy, personal identity concerns what makes a person the same through time. Debates focus on criteria such as memory, continuity of consciousness, and bodily persistence, and their bearing on responsibility and rights.

In sociology and cultural studies, social identities refer to the ways individuals identify themselves and are identified by others, including categories like ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, or profession. The study of identiteete involves how these identities intersect and influence social roles, behavior, and power dynamics.

In information technology and law, identity extends to digital or legal persons: digital identities used for authentication and access control; identity documents such as passports or national IDs used to verify a person in civic processes.
