Icebased

Icebased is a term used in multiple domains to denote concepts, devices, or systems that rely on ice or low-temperature processes as a foundational element. The term is not associated with a single, widely recognized topic, and its meaning tends to vary by context.

In energy management and building services, ice-based thermal energy storage refers to systems that create and store ice to provide cooling when needed. During off-peak hours, water or brine is frozen into ice. The stored energy is retrieved by melting the ice, absorbing heat from the building and reducing peak electrical demand. ITS systems can improve energy efficiency and reduce demand charges, but they require adequate insulation, space for ice storage, and careful control strategies to minimize water and energy losses.

Industrial and data center cooling applications also use ice-based approaches, such as ice slurry or ice-water circulating systems, to lower temperatures with reduced fan and pump power. Adoption depends on climate, electricity pricing, and retrofit feasibility.
