ISDN is a set of digital communication protocols that allows for the transmission of voice and data simultaneously over standard telephone lines. ISDN was an advancement over traditional analog telephone lines, offering higher bandwidth and faster speeds for data transmission. It was designed to carry multiple types of signals, including voice calls, fax transmissions, and data, over a single pair of copper wires. This was achieved through digital encoding and multiplexing techniques.

There were two primary types of ISDN interfaces: Basic Rate Interface (BRI) and Primary Rate Interface (PRI). BRI typically provided two 64 kbit/s "B" channels for carrying voice or data, and one 16 kbit/s "D" channel for signaling and control. PRI offered a larger number of B channels, typically 23 or 30, depending on the region, along with a single D channel.

While ISDN was a significant step forward in digital communication, it has largely been superseded by newer technologies such as broadband internet services like DSL, cable, and fiber optics. These modern technologies offer substantially higher speeds and greater capacity than ISDN. Therefore, ISDNlinjens, representing an ISDN line, is now considered an older technology.
