ISBN14
ISBN14 refers to a proposed but never officially adopted 14-digit International Standard Book Number. The ISBN system, which assigns unique identifiers to books, originally used 10 digits. In the early 2000s, discussions and proposals were made to extend this to 14 digits to accommodate a growing number of publications and ensure continued uniqueness. The primary motivation for a longer ISBN was the exhaustion of available 10-digit numbers. However, the transition to a 13-digit ISBN, known as ISBN13, was implemented instead. ISBN13 is based on the European Article Number (EAN) standard and is now the globally recognized format for book identification. The ISBN14 concept never gained traction and is not a recognized standard within the book industry or by the International ISBN Agency. It remains an unfulfilled proposal in the history of book identification systems.
