These thermometers are particularly useful for measuring the temperature of surfaces that are difficult to reach, moving, or extremely hot, making them unsuitable for contact thermometers. They are also advantageous when preventing contamination is crucial, as they do not require physical contact with the object being measured. Common applications include industrial maintenance for monitoring machinery, food safety for checking cooking temperatures, and medical use for non-invasive temperature checks.

The accuracy of an IR thermometer depends on several factors, including the emissivity of the surface being measured, the distance between the thermometer and the object, and the ambient temperature. Emissivity refers to the efficiency with which a surface emits thermal radiation. Different materials have different emissivity values, and many IR thermometers allow for adjustment of this setting to improve accuracy. The measuring range and accuracy specifications are important considerations when selecting an IR thermometer for a specific application.
