IRfilters

IR filters are optical components designed to shape the spectral content of light by transmitting infrared wavelengths while rejecting other regions, typically the visible. They are used to isolate infrared radiation for imaging and sensing or to block infrared content in systems that rely on visible-light cameras.

Filters come in several families. Interference (dielectric) filters use multilayer coatings to provide sharp cutoffs or narrow passbands and are common in research-grade instruments. Absorption filters use doped glass or crystal that attenuates visible and near-IR light, often yielding smoother transmission curves. Common configurations include long-pass (transmits wavelengths above a cutoff), short-pass (below a cutoff), band-pass (a restricted range), and notch filters (blocking a narrow band). Dichroic or hot/cold mirrors separate spectra by wavelength and are used in projectors, cameras, and spectrometers.

Materials and construction vary with the target wavelength. Near-infrared filters (up to about 2.5 micrometers) often use glass substrates and dielectric coatings; mid- and far-infrared filters employ substrates such as germanium, silicon, zinc selenide, or calcium fluoride with specialized coatings. Performance depends on the angle of incidence, temperature, and substrate quality, with metrics including transmission curve, blocking outside the passband, and environmental robustness.

Applications span photography and videography (IR photography and IR-cut filters), astronomy and planetary science, thermal imaging and spectroscopy, and scientific instrumentation. Selection considerations include the desired passband, optical density, substrate material, coating durability, and the operating environment.
