INFVerträge refers to International Non-Proliferation Treaty contracts, though this term is not standardly used. More commonly, discussions around the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) involve a range of agreements and understandings between states. The NPT itself, which entered into force in 1970, is a landmark international treaty whose dual objectives are to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament.

States that are parties to the NPT undertake specific commitments. Non-nuclear-weapon states agree not to acquire nuclear weapons, while the five recognized nuclear-weapon states (the United States, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom) commit to pursuing nuclear disarmament. All parties are also committed to facilitating the exchange of equipment, materials, and scientific and technological information for the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) plays a crucial verification role under the NPT, implementing safeguards agreements to ensure that nuclear material is not diverted from peaceful uses to weapons programs. These safeguards are based on bilateral agreements between the IAEA and individual states, or multilateral agreements in some cases. The effectiveness of the NPT relies on these comprehensive verification mechanisms and the ongoing commitment of its state parties to its provisions. Various protocols and additional agreements can further refine the implementation and scope of the NPT's obligations.
