Interleukin-12 (IL-12) is a cytokine in the IL-12 family that functions as a heterodimer consisting of two subunits, p35 and p40, encoded by IL12A and IL12B genes. In humans, the biologically active form is IL-12p70. It is primarily produced by professional antigen-presenting cells, including dendritic cells, macrophages, and monocytes, in response to microbial stimuli such as lipopolysaccharide and CpG DNA, as well as during inflammatory conditions.
