The International Commission on Radiological Protection, or ICRP, is an independent international organization that develops and disseminates recommendations on radiation protection. Its core principles are fundamental to establishing and maintaining effective radiation safety programs worldwide. These principles are primarily aimed at protecting people and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.

The three fundamental principles of radiation protection are justification, optimization, and limitation. Justification states that any practice that involves exposure to ionizing radiation must do more good than harm. This means that the benefits gained from the practice must outweigh the potential risks associated with radiation exposure. Optimization, often referred to as the ALARA principle, dictates that radiation doses should be kept as low as reasonably achievable, taking into account social and economic factors. This principle emphasizes minimizing exposure without hindering the intended benefits of the practice.

The third principle is limitation, which sets dose limits for individuals. These limits are designed to prevent deterministic effects (effects that occur above a certain threshold dose) and to reduce the probability of stochastic effects (effects with a probability that increases with dose, such as cancer). The ICRP continuously reviews and updates its recommendations based on the latest scientific knowledge and understanding of radiation effects. These principles are widely adopted by regulatory bodies and organizations globally to ensure the safe use of radiation in medicine, industry, and research.
