The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) is a key institution within the World Bank Group. It was established in 1944, initially to finance the reconstruction of countries devastated by World War II. Today, IBRD's primary mission is to provide financing, risk management products, and advisory services to middle-income and creditworthy low-income countries. It also aims to promote sustainable development and poverty reduction.

IBRD raises its funds by issuing bonds in the world's capital markets. These bonds are typically rated AAA, reflecting the strong backing of IBRD's member governments. The bank then lends these funds to governments at market-related interest rates. Loans are generally long-term and are tailored to the specific needs of borrowing countries, supporting a wide range of development projects and programs. These can include infrastructure, education, health, public sector management, and environmental protection.

In addition to lending, IBRD provides technical assistance and policy advice to its client countries. This support helps governments strengthen their institutions, improve their economic policies, and attract private investment. IBRD's work is guided by the overarching goal of reducing poverty and promoting shared prosperity. It operates in close collaboration with its member governments, the private sector, and other development partners. The institution's lending activities are complemented by the International Development Association (IDA), which provides concessional financing to the poorest countries.
