The structure of an IBAN varies by country, but it generally follows a consistent format. For example, in Germany, an IBAN might look like DE89 3704 0044 0532 0130 00, where "DE" is the country code, "89" are the check digits, and the remaining digits represent the basic bank account number.

The adoption of IBAN-based systems has been widespread, particularly in the European Union, where it has become a standard for cross-border payments. This system has significantly improved the efficiency and reliability of international money transfers, benefiting both financial institutions and individual customers.
