Høyfjæresonen

Høyfjæresonen, also known as the upper eulittoral or the barnacle zone, is a marine ecological zone. It is situated at the very top of the intertidal zone, the area between high tide and low tide. This region is characterized by its infrequent submersion, typically only being flooded during exceptionally high tides or storms. Consequently, life in the høyfjæresonen must be highly adapted to survive long periods of exposure to air, desiccation, and fluctuating temperatures.

Organisms found in the høyfjæresonen are primarily those that can tolerate extreme conditions. Barnacles, limpets, and certain species of algae are common inhabitants. These organisms often have hard shells or protective coverings to prevent water loss. Their ability to cling tightly to rocks or other substrates is crucial to avoid being washed away by waves. The zone often appears barren compared to lower intertidal areas due to the harshness of the environment. Food sources are scarce, and competition for the limited resources is intense. The specific species present can vary depending on geographical location, wave exposure, and the type of substrate available. This zone serves as a transition between terrestrial and fully marine environments.
