Höyrydesinfiointi, also known as steam sterilization, is a method of disinfection and sterilization that uses steam under pressure to kill microorganisms. This process is highly effective because high-temperature steam can penetrate materials and kill bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. The effectiveness of steam sterilization is dependent on three factors: temperature, time, and the presence of steam.

The process typically occurs within a device called an autoclave. In an autoclave, materials are exposed to saturated steam at a specific temperature and pressure for a set duration. Common parameters for sterilization include 121 degrees Celsius (250 degrees Fahrenheit) at 15 psi for 15 minutes, or 134 degrees Celsius (273 degrees Fahrenheit) at 30 psi for 3 minutes. The pressure is crucial for raising the boiling point of water, allowing steam to reach temperatures higher than 100 degrees Celsius.

Höyrydesinfiointi is widely used in healthcare settings, laboratories, and the food industry. It is employed to sterilize medical instruments, laboratory equipment, and certain types of waste. Its advantages include its reliability, non-toxicity (as it uses only water and heat), and its ability to sterilize heat-stable items effectively. However, it is not suitable for heat-sensitive materials or items that can be damaged by moisture. Proper loading and maintenance of the autoclave are essential to ensure the efficacy of the sterilization cycle. Indicators, both chemical and biological, are often used to confirm that the sterilization process has been successful.
