Höyläkoneita

A höyläkone, or planer in English, is a woodworking machine used to flatten, reduce the thickness of, and impart a smooth surface to a rough piece of lumber. It works by using a rotating cutter head equipped with blades to shave off thin layers of wood. There are two primary types of höyläkoneita: the jointer and the thickness planer.

A jointer typically has a long table with two rotating cutters positioned between two infeed and outfeed tables. It is used to flatten one face of a board and square one edge to that face. This creates a reference surface for subsequent operations.

A thickness planer, on the other hand, is designed to make the opposite face of a board parallel to the already flattened face and to reduce the board to a desired thickness. It features a cutter head positioned above a feed mechanism that moves the lumber through the machine.
