Högskoleutbildning

Högskoleutbildning, often translated as higher education or university education, refers to the academic studies undertaken after completing secondary education. In Sweden, this system is structured around universities and university colleges (högskolor). These institutions offer a wide range of programs at different academic levels, including Bachelor's (kandidat), Master's (magister/master), and Doctoral (doktorsexamen) degrees.

Admission to högskoleutbildning is typically based on a combination of academic merit from secondary school and specific entry requirements for individual programs. Many programs are competitive, and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a place. The Swedish higher education system is largely publicly funded, meaning that tuition fees are generally not charged for Swedish and EU/EEA citizens. However, students are usually responsible for living expenses.

The system aims to provide specialized knowledge and skills, foster critical thinking, and prepare students for various professional careers or further academic pursuits. Research is an integral part of university activities, and many programs incorporate research-based learning. Högskoleutbildning is overseen by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (Universitetskanslersämbetet, UKÄ), which is responsible for quality assurance and supervision.
