Héðinsfjarðargöng
The Héðinsfjarðargöng are two road tunnels in northern Iceland connecting the towns of Siglufjörður and Ólafsfjörður. The tunnels significantly reduced travel time and improved accessibility to these previously isolated communities. Construction began in 2006 and the tunnels were officially opened in 2010. The project involved the creation of two main bores, with the eastern tunnel being longer than the western one. The total length of the tunnel system is approximately 6.7 kilometers. Before the tunnels were built, travel between the two towns involved a challenging and often impassable mountain road, particularly during winter months. The completion of the Héðinsfjarðargöng has been a major boon for the local economy and residents, facilitating easier transport of goods and people, and encouraging tourism. The tunnels are a significant piece of infrastructure in the Tröllaskagi peninsula.
