Häkävaroittimet, also known as carbon monoxide detectors, are electronic devices designed to detect the presence of carbon monoxide (CO) gas in the air. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels. Sources of CO in homes include faulty furnaces, stoves, fireplaces, water heaters, and vehicle exhaust.

Exposure to carbon monoxide can be extremely dangerous, leading to symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. At higher concentrations, it can cause loss of consciousness, brain damage, and even death. Because CO is undetectable by human senses, warning devices are crucial for safety.

Häkävaroittimet typically employ electrochemical sensors to detect CO. When the gas is present above a certain threshold, the sensor triggers an audible alarm, usually a loud, piercing siren, to alert occupants of the potential danger. Modern häkävaroittimet often have digital displays that show the CO concentration and may also include features like battery backup, low battery warnings, and interconnectedness, allowing multiple units to sound simultaneously.

It is recommended to install häkävaroittimet on every level of a home, especially near sleeping areas and in rooms containing fuel-burning appliances. Regular testing and maintenance, including replacing batteries as needed and testing the alarm function, are essential to ensure the device is functioning correctly. The lifespan of a häkävaroitin is also limited, and manufacturers typically recommend replacement every 5 to 10 years.
