Hyötykompostointi is the Finnish term for beneficial composting, referring to the process of decomposing organic waste materials to create nutrient-rich compost for use in gardens and agriculture. This method is a sustainable way to manage household waste, reducing the amount of material sent to landfills and providing a valuable soil amendment.

The process typically involves collecting kitchen scraps, yard waste, and other organic materials and placing them in a compost bin or pile. Proper composting requires a balance of carbon-rich "brown" materials, such as dried leaves, straw, and cardboard, and nitrogen-rich "green" materials, like vegetable peels, grass clippings, and coffee grounds. Aeration, achieved through turning the compost pile, and moisture are also crucial for efficient decomposition by microorganisms.
