The term does not correspond to a widely recognized, well-defined family of molecules in standard thyroid physiology, and there is no consensus on its exact meaning or biological relevance. In discussions where it appears, hypertyreoosins are described as potential endogenous factors that could influence thyroid activity, metabolism, or hormone signaling, but their chemical nature remains uncharacterized.

Proposed origins and chemical nature are heterogeneous in the literature. Some authors suggest that hypertyreoosins could be peptide or protein factors produced by thyroid follicular cells or neighboring tissues, while others envisage non-peptide metabolites with signaling properties. Because there is no established molecular identity, the precise size, structure, and receptor interactions of hypertyreoosins are unknown and likely to vary in hypothetical models.
