Hyperemphasis is the use of unusually strong emphasis in communication to draw attention to a word, phrase, or idea. It spans linguistic, typographic, and multimedia domains and can be intentional or stylistic, sometimes crossing into exaggerated forms. It is not a formal linguistic category, but a descriptive label for techniques that push emphasis beyond standard norms.

In text, hyperemphasis appears through capitalization, bold or italic styling, large font size, color changes, or repeated punctuation. In spoken language, it shows as unusually loud volume, extended or stressed syllables, or deliberate pacing. In digital media, it combines several modalities (visual styling, motion, or sound) to ensure a message stands out.

Hyperemphasis is common in advertising, sensational journalism, social media, and branding, where the goal is rapid attention capture or strong emotional response. While it can enhance recall or urgency, excessive use can undermine credibility, hinder readability, and fatigue readers or listeners. Accessibility concerns arise when emphasis relies solely on color or visual cues or when it disrupts screen readers.
