Hymettus

Hymettus is a mountain range in East Attica, Greece, located southeast of Athens. It is known for its ancient and modern significance. Historically, the mountain was renowned for its marble quarries and its honey, which was highly prized in the ancient world. The poet Plato often referenced Hymettus in his dialogues, and it was a popular site for philosophical contemplation and recreation. The ancient Greeks also believed the mountain was home to Muses, the goddesses of inspiration.

The name "Hymettus" is believed to derive from the Greek word "hymnos," meaning hymn or song, possibly reflecting the sounds of nature on the mountain or its association with the Muses. During the Byzantine era, several monasteries were established on its slopes, some of which still exist today. In more recent history, Hymettus has been a source of building materials for Athens and a vital natural reserve.

Modern Hymettus is a protected area, offering hiking trails and panoramic views of Athens and the surrounding region. The mountain is divided into two main peaks, Great Hymettus (1,026 meters) and Little Hymettus (906 meters). Its diverse flora and fauna contribute to its ecological importance. The lower slopes are often covered in scrubland and pine forests, while higher altitudes feature more sparse vegetation. The honey produced on Hymettus continues to be a local specialty, carrying on an age-old tradition.
