Hydroxyglutarate

Hydroxyglutarate is a naturally occurring organic compound that plays a crucial role in cellular metabolism. It is a dicarboxylic acid derivative of glutaric acid, in which a hydroxyl group is attached to the second carbon atom. Hydroxyglutarate can exist in two isomeric forms: L-2-hydroxyglutarate and D-2-hydroxyglutarate.

L-2-hydroxyglutarate is a known metabolite in the citric acid cycle, where it is produced from the metabolism of alpha-ketoglutarate. D-2-hydroxyglutarate, on the other hand, is a byproduct of the metabolism of alpha-ketoglutarate in certain microorganisms, such as Enterobacteriaceae. It has been shown to exhibit mutagenic and oncogenic properties, and its overproduction has been associated with cancer development, particularly in the context of isocitrate dehydrogenase mutations. Research on D-2-hydroxyglutarate has shed light on the complex relationship between cellular metabolism and cancer development.
