Hydridedonating

Hydridedonating refers to the process where a chemical species transfers a hydride ion (H⁻) to another species. A hydride ion is a hydrogen atom that has gained an electron, giving it a negative charge. Hydridedonating agents are often referred to as reducing agents because they donate electrons in the form of a hydride ion, thereby reducing the recipient.

Common hydridedonating agents include metal hydrides such as sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) and lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH₄). These reagents are widely used in organic synthesis to reduce various functional groups, including aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and esters. The strength and selectivity of the hydridedonating agent can be controlled by its chemical structure, allowing chemists to achieve specific transformations. For example, NaBH₄ is a milder reducing agent and is often used to selectively reduce aldehydes and ketones in the presence of other reducible groups.
