Hydratiseringsenergi, also known as hydration energy, is the energy released when an ion or molecule becomes surrounded by water molecules. This process, called solvation or hydration, is a key aspect of the behavior of ionic compounds and polar molecules in aqueous solutions. When ions dissolve in water, the polar water molecules orient themselves around the charged ions. The positive ends of the water dipoles are attracted to anions, and the negative ends are attracted to cations. This interaction results in the formation of a hydration shell, a layer of water molecules tightly bound to the ion.

The strength of the interaction between the ion and water molecules determines the magnitude of the hydration energy.
