Hydrataatioilmiöihin refers to phenomena related to hydration, the process of combining with or dissolving in water. In chemistry, this often involves the formation of hydrates, which are compounds that contain water molecules within their crystal structure. These water molecules, known as water of crystallization, are incorporated into the compound's lattice during its formation. The number of water molecules per formula unit can vary, leading to different forms of the same compound, such as copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O) versus anhydrous copper(II) sulfate (CuSO4).

The interaction between the water molecules and the ions or molecules of the solute is typically electrostatic in nature. For ionic compounds, water molecules surround the ions, weakening the ionic bonds and often leading to dissolution. This process is called hydration. The energy released during hydration is known as the enthalpy of hydration.

Hydration is a crucial process in many natural and industrial settings. In biology, hydration is fundamental to life, as water is the primary solvent for biochemical reactions within cells and plays a role in maintaining cell structure and function. The formation and dissolution of hydrates also play a role in soil chemistry and the transport of minerals.
