Huokoisu

Huokoisuus is a Finnish term that translates to "porosity" in English. It refers to the measure of void spaces in a material, typically a solid. These void spaces, or pores, can be distributed throughout the material's volume. The concept of huokoisuus is crucial in various scientific and engineering disciplines, impacting properties like strength, density, fluid transport, and thermal insulation.

Materials can exhibit different types of porosity. Open porosity refers to interconnected pores that can allow fluids to pass through. Closed porosity, on the other hand, consists of isolated pores that are not connected to the surface and therefore do not permit fluid flow. The degree of huokoisuus is often expressed as a percentage of the total volume occupied by the pores.
