Hudbarriären, also known as the stratum corneum or the outermost layer of the skin, plays a crucial role in protecting the body from external environmental factors and maintaining internal homeostasis. This complex structure is composed of flattened, dead cells called corneocytes embedded in a lipid matrix. This lipid matrix, primarily made up of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids, is essential for the barrier's integrity and its ability to prevent the uncontrolled passage of water and solutes.

The primary function of the hudbarriären is to act as a physical barrier, preventing the entry of pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, as well as allergens and other harmful substances. Its ability to regulate inflammation is also a key aspect of its protective role.
