Hubble's Law, also known as the Hubble–Lemaître law, is a fundamental principle in cosmology that describes the observed expansion of the universe. It states that galaxies are moving away from us, and that their recessional velocity is directly proportional to their distance from Earth. This relationship was first observed by Edwin Hubble in the late 1920s, building on the theoretical work of Georges Lemaître.

The law is typically expressed as v = H₀d, where v is the recessional velocity of a galaxy, d is its distance from Earth, and H₀ is the Hubble constant. The Hubble constant represents the rate at which the universe is expanding. Its precise value has been a subject of ongoing research and debate, with different measurement techniques yielding slightly different results.

The discovery of Hubble's Law provided strong evidence for the Big Bang theory, the prevailing cosmological model that suggests the universe began in an extremely hot and dense state and has been expanding ever since. The farther away a galaxy is, the more the space between it and us has expanded, carrying it away at a faster speed. This observed proportionality is a direct consequence of this expansion.

Hubble's Law has been instrumental in determining the age and scale of the universe. By extrapolating the expansion backward in time, astronomers can estimate when the universe began. While the law describes the expansion of space itself, it's important to note that it doesn't imply we are at the center of the universe; the expansion is happening uniformly in all directions from every point.
